My name is Lauren, and I'm currently a Controller at Goldman Sachs. To give some background about myself, I majored in accounting at the University of Maryland, College Park, and had a 4.0 GPA. I graduated Maryland in December 2008, and took my CPA exams before starting in the Financial Services practice in September 2009. During college I periodically tutored the financial and management accounting classes. From my experience, I believe the best way to master accounting is by practicing problems, most of which can be done on the students' time. Most accounting concepts are fundamentally simple, they just become confusing once all the numbers and exceptions are layered on. During school I'd structure the sessions by starting with a high level explanation of the concept, doing a sample problem for each section, and then letting the student decide if he/she would like to work on the remaining problems together, or do them on his/her own time and call me with questions. I currently live in Riverdale, and would gladly meet at a near by Starbucks or library for the tutoring sessions. I'm available most evenings (starting at 6 in Manhattan and 8:30 in the Bronx), and all day Sunday.
